A TIME TO BE BORN

Georgia Mae Bassett, "Phil" as she was affectionately known was born on March 5, 1953, to the late Vanus and
Icey Mae Bassett. To this union ten children would be born. Seven siblings preceded her in death (Louise Tatum,
Barbara Prince, Josie Bassett, Betty Bassett, King Bassett, O.D. Bassett and Bernice Brown). She was also preceded
by her soul mate John Henry Jones, two nieces Shirley and Patricia Bassett and stepson John M. Wilkerson. She
received her formal education from the Yazoo County School system. She was baptized at Steve Chapel M.B.
Church and later through Christian experience became a member of Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church. She
would continue to dedicate herself to the Lord and her church until her health failed.

A TIME TO LIVE

Although Phil was formally educated by the Yazoo County School system, she was provided an education of a
lifetime though her work as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and community mother. Phil
never met a stranger, and she never missed the opportunity to welcome others into her home, whether it was a
home cooked meal, a good story, a good "talking" too or just simply a place to lay their heads, Phil became what so
many was missing, a mother figure. Phil loved to cook, grow her garden but most of all fish. A lot of times she
would leave home in search of that great catch and would return empty handed but that never stopped her from
trying to get to the next pond bank as she would say. Phil's greatest joy, as she was quick to tell all who would
listen, was the fact that she had raised all her children, and none had gotten in trouble.

A TIME TO REST

On Friday at approximately 2:35 p.m., Phil was visited by the Lord and escorted to her new home, far away from
sickness and pain. In this home she was met by all the loved ones who had gone on before her and imagine her joy
upon seeing her best friends Goo (Betty), Ann (Josie), Bridget Dent and especially her lifelong partner John Henry
Jones. Phil leaves to cherish all her unique ways of doing and saying things and memories to her nine children
Samuel T. Bassett (Danette), Eddie E. Bassett, Linda D. (Andre) Carter, Clifton J. Bassett, James E. (Rochelle)
Bassett, Monique (Fredrick) Williams, Victoria Bassett (Maurice), Georgia H. (Marcus) Hudson and Ebony Jones;
Her stepson Darren Robinson and nephews that she raised like her own children Sammie Bassett and Sherman
Bassett. Phil also leaves behind to cherish her memories her sister Mary Bassett (Cleotha), Catherine Bassett (Tim),
Hannah (Sylvester) Moton, brother in laws Lloyd Sherman Geralds and William McKinnley, twenty-six
grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
