Obituary

Most of Johnny's young adulthood was spent on Carter Road in Yazoo
County, working on the farm to help support the family because his
father's frequent illness. Later, Johnny returned to Isola, MS where he
resided many years working and managing fish ponds. Afterward, he
moved to Yazoo City and became employed by Symthe Farms, Tribett
Road in Leland MS. He was employed with Symthe Farms at his death.
Johnny loved the sound and smell of tires squealing as he raced down
the runway. He was an avid sports car driver. He later gave up the
smell of burning rubber for the smell of mud. He started out driving
mud trucks for someone else. He loved it so much that he bought his
own truck to beat those he had driven for; that mighty Sharecropper.
Johnny was the top man to beat over the state.
Johnny's father, Thomas James Gates, preceded him in death as well
as four siblings that have paved the way for him to the Pearly Gates of
Heaven awaiting a grand reunion: Princess M. Gates of Chicago Illinois;
Charles E. Gates of Fort Braggs, North Carolina; Karline D. J Gates. and
Bobbie N. Gates both of Yazoo City, MS.
Johnny Roy was residing in Yazoo City at time of his death Leaving to
celebrate his transition to his everlasting life: His mate of 23 years,
Angela Carter of Yazoo City; one daughter, Jalisa Gates, of Huntsville,
Alabama; 3 sons; Michael Gates of Cedar Falls, IA, Cedrick Qualls, of
Kankakee, ILL, and Timothy Scott of Belzoni, MS and five
grandchildren. His mother, Idella of Yazoo City, sisters: Rosie Parks
(Eddie) of Alton, Ill, Tommie Jackson of Pearl, MS, Blondie Robinson,
(Willie Earl), Yazoo City, Nancy Wilson (Roy), of Yazoo, Gail Gates,
(Vertis), of Canton, Lisa Gates of Ridgeland. Brothers: Raymond (Ricky)
Gates, Yazoo City, Milton Gates(Jackie) of Yazoo, Tracy Gates,
(Melinda), of Yazoo and O. J. Gates of Yazoo. Johnny also has many
Nieces, great Nieces and great, great Nieces that loved him dearly.
Nephews, great nephews, great, great nephews some of whom he
taught the value of a hard day's work. Cousins who will miss his
frequent calls just to say hello. Many, many friends and associates.
