Wellington Cox

On February 8, 1940, in Yazoo City, Mississippi; Wellington Cox Jr., well known as Hula,
was born to the union of the Wellington Cox Sr. and Lillie Bea Cox. Named after his
father, Wellington was the seventh child of eleven children. At an early age, he
accepted Christ as his savior, and was baptized at New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church
under the leadership of the late Rev. James Walker. He was an active member of
Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he sung in the choir. Throughout his life,
he demonstrated his love of the Lord through his lifestyle as a wonderful son, father,
grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He was preceded in death by his father Wellington Cox, Sr; Mother, Lillie Bea Cox; and
siblings: Betty Jean Hudson, Shirley Jones, Willie Mae Cox, Willie James Cox, Robert
Earl Cox, Herman Lee Cox , Bennie Lewis Cox and Cleophus Cox.
Wellington was a graduate of Yazoo City Training School Class of 1961. He furthered
his education at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, where he received his
Bachelors of Science in Health and Physical Education. His education did not stop
there. He received a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of
Wisconsin.
Wellington Cox's career was once of educating children in the classroom, coaching
children in track & field and refereeing football, basketball, softball, baseball and
volleyball. Wellington was a wonderful teacher, mentor, coach and referee inspiring
the children as he taught in Wisconsin, Texas and Louisiana. He never met a stranger
and made friends everywhere he went. Wellington was recognized and received
numerous awards and accolades throughout his lifetime.
Words cannot express how much Wellington will be missed by all the lives he touched.
The community has lost a caring, thoughtful leader and his family has lost a loving,
entertaining and charismatic family member that will live in our hearts forever. His
memories will be forever cherished in the lives of his children : Fred Levison (Darlene)

of Jackson, MS, Lakesha Warren of Yazoo City, MS and Crystal Cox-Brown (Dontee) of
New Orleans, LA; two brothers, Leon Cleveland of Eurlid,Ohio and Henry Cox of
Milwaukee, WI; eleven grandchildren: Daniel Cox, Michael Hardy, Jessie Vaughan,
Matthew Cox, Tiffany Warren, the late Comelia Warren, Keith Warren, Michael
Warren, Jaxon Brown, Daniel Jones (Nicole), Denneille Joseph and 19 great-grand
children, Special Friend Mildred Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and
